ABOUT Honey Modak RECIPE

Modak is a sweet dumplings very much popular in Maharashtra. Modak can be fried or steamed. Ukadiche Modak is a marathi word which means "Steamed modak". I prepared this with fresh coconut and honey. Modak has a special importance in the worship of the Hindu god, Ganesh. Modak is believed to be his favourite food and Ganesh worship ceremony pooja concludes with offering of 21 modaks to the deity.

Ingredients Serving: 6

  1. 1 big cup (125 grams) Basmati Rice flour
  2. 4 tablespoon Dabur Honey
  3. Half fresh coconut
  4. 1/4 teaspoon salt
  5. 1 teaspoon butter
  6. 1 teaspoon ghee (clarified butter)
  7. 1/4 teaspoon green cardamom powder
  8. 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg powder
  9. 1 teaspoon oil to grease thali
  10. 1 Cup water
  11. Water to boil modak

  3. For filling, scrape or grate coconut. .
  4. Heat a vessel add ghee, grated coconut and honey.
  5. Cook the coconut and honey together over medium-low heat.
  6. Add cardamom powder and nutmeg powder, mix.
  7. Stir continuously to avoid burning, once mixture is thick, turn the heat off.
  8. To make cover, boil 2 cups of water, add pinch of salt and butter.
  9. Once water starts boiling, turn the heat to low and add 2 cups of flour and stir vigorously.
  10. Stir continuously.
  11. Cover and let the steam trap inside to cook the dough. after 2 minutes remove it from the heat.
  12. Put the dough over a flat surface. Knead it when its warm.
  13. Wet your hand with warm water and knead to a soft pliable dough. Use little oil if needed.
  14. Make 2 inch balls of the dough. Keep the remaining dough covered.
  15. Roll the dough into nice thin disc.
  16. Put 1 tbsp coconut mixture in the center Pinch 5 to 7 times on the edges by keeping equal distance.
  17. Pull them together and join to form a peak. It will look like whole garlic bulb.
  18. Grease thali, put all the modak and steam cook into a steamer or special modak steamer for 12 to 15 minutes.
  19. Your delicious Honey Modak is ready.
  20. Offer the modaks with Desi ghee or Dabur Honey to Ganpati bappa and serve them as sweets at lunch.
