ABOUT Kumror chakka RECIPE

Kumror chakka is pumpkin, potato and black chick pea gravy is a traditional Bengali recipe. This dish is an absolute delight and it's a common in every Bengali household, though the preparation varies with respect to the masalas used. It is very simple with minimal ingredients yet highly flavorful. The black chick peas add that nuttiness which goes great with the sweet pumpkin. It is a no onion and garlic recipe. It's usually served with roti, parantha or puri.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Pumpkin, diced 2 cups
  2. Potato, diced 2 cups
  3. Black chick peas, boiled 1/2 cup
  4. Refined oil
  5. Fenugreek seeds 1/2 teaspoon
  6. Hing 1/4 teaspoon
  7. Dried red chillies 2
  8. ginger grated 1 inch
  9. Green chillies slited 2-3
  10. Tomato chopped 1 large
  11. Roasted and ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon
  12. Roasted and ground coriander seeds 1 teaspoon
  13. Salt per taste
  14. Sugar per taste
  15. Turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon

Instructions

  1. To a Kadai add oil, once the oil is hot add fenugreek seeds, hing and dried chillies.
  2. Once it fragnents add grated ginger and slitted green chillies.
  3. After a minute add chopped tomatoes, saute for 2 minutes.
  4. Add the potato and pumpkin dices.
  5. Add turmeric powder, roasted and ground cumin and coriander powder, salt and sugar.
  6. Mix everything well, cover and cook until the pumpkin and potatoes are done.
  7. Add the black chick peas and simmer for 5 more minutes.
  8. Serve hot with Roti, Parantha or puri.
