Yummy side dish for idli and dosa

Ingredients Serving: 6

  1. Toor dhal :1/2 glass
  2. Channa dhal:1/2 glass
  3. Red chilli:3
  4. Onion:2 big chopped
  5. Tomato:1 chopped
  6. ginger and garlic paste:2 spoon
  7. Curry leaves: 1/4 cup
  8. Red chilli powder:1 spoon
  9. coriander powder:2 spoon
  10. salt :as required
  11. oil :2 tablespoons
  12. coriander leaves: for toppings
  13. Bay leaf:1
  14. Cinnamon:1
  15. Cloves:2


  1. Wash and soak dhal for 3 hours.
  2. Blend along with red chilli and salt to a fine paste.
  3. Heat dosa tawa and pour this grounded batter like dosa and drop oil in all the sides.
  4. Turn upside down and drop oil .
  5. Fry till golden brown spots appears and transfer to a plate. By using hand make this in to small pieces and keep it aside.
  6. Heat oil in a pan fry bay leaf, cinnamon, cloves and fry for a second.
  7. Add ginger and garlic paste and fry till aroma comes out.
Add onion and saute till translucent.
  8. Now add tomatoes and fry till mushy.
  9. Add chilli powder, coriander powder , turmeric powder and salt .
  10. Now add little water and cook .
  11. Add in the steamed dal and add 2 cups of water.. Mash with a back of a ladle.
  12. Cover this and cook in a medium flame for 10 minutes. By now the gravy must be thickened and will start emitting a nice aroma.
  13. If needed add little water , usually it will be a semi solid gravy.
  14. Garnish with coriander leaves.
