Goulash is a Hungarian stew dish made with with meat and vegetables and it has the distinct flavour of paprika.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 700 gms beef , cut into pieces of ½ inch size
  2. 4 medium sized onions, finely chopped
  3. 2 medium sized tomatoes, finely chopped
  4. 2 medium sized potatoes, cut into cubes
  5. 6 cloves of garlic, mashed
  6. ½ teaspoon black pepper, freshly grounded
  7. ¼ cup paprika
  8. 1 bay leaf
  9. 4 tablespoons of pork fat or butter
  10. 1 litre beef broth
  11. salt to taste


  1. Take a heavy bottomed pan and heat the pork fat/butter on a medium flame. Once its hot, add the chopped onions and cook till they turn brown in colour.
  2. Then remove this pan from the flame and mix in the paprika. Now put this pan back on the flame, add the garlic and chopped beef. Stir well and let it cook for 8-10 minutes.
  3. Next pour in the beef broth along with the tomatoes, potatoes, bay leaf and pepper.
  4. Bring this to a boil, then add salt to taste and stir well. Now lower the flame, cover it with a lid and let it simmer and cook for 40-45 minutes.
  5. Serve this dish with sour cream and bread on the side.
