ABOUT Chicken Nizami RECIPE

Nizami Chicken is popular non-vegetarian Hyderabadi dish, that is cooked with aromatic spices and lastly added coconut, yogurt and fresh cream then simmered for about 5 minutes. Garnished with coriander leaves, green chillies and serve hot with fresh naan.

Ingredients Serving: 10

  1. 2 inch piece of cinnamon 
  2. 1 tbsp hot Milk 
  3. 1/4 cup oil 
  4. 1 medium Onion, chopped
  5. 1 tsp ginger - Garlic paste
  6. 2 Bay Leaves
  7. 1 1/2 kg chicken-cut into 8 pieces
  8. 4 green Chillies
  9. 1/4 cup coconut and soaked in 1/2 a cup of hot water 
  10. coriander leaves - roughly chopped
  11. 4 tbsp yogurt, whipped
  12. 1/4 tsp saffron
  13. 4 tbsp cream whipped
  14. Grinding ingredients:
  15. 1 tsp cumin seeds 
  16. 1 tsp Poppy seeds 
  17. 3 cardamoms
  18. 4 cloves 
  19. 10 dried Red chillies 
  20. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder 
  21. 2 tbsp desiccated coconut


  1. Grind all the ingredients from cumin seeds to the cinnamon to a fine paste. 
  2. Extract the milk from the soaked coconut and set aside. 
  3. Heat the saffron for 2 seconds, crush it, and then soak in hot milk. 
  4. Heat oil and fry the onions till it is golden-brown. Add the ginger-garlic paste and fry for a couple of minutes. Add the ground paste and bay leaves. Let it simmer for 5 minutes. Add the chicken pieces and 1/2 a cup of water and continue cooking, for approximately 20 minutes, over a low heat.
  5. When the chicken is almost cooked, add the coconut milk, green chillies, coriander leaves and yogurt. Cook till the chicken is tender. Add the cream and saffron and simmer for 2 minutes.
  6. Serve hot.
