ABOUT General Tso's Tofu RECIPE

Today's weekend special is a Chinese-American dish called General Tso's Tofu. It is the vegetarian version of General Tso's Chicken that is quite a popular item on Chinese fast food and restaurant menus in America and Canada.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. For Crispy Tofu:
  2. Firm or Extra-firm Tofu - 1 (16oz.) pkg drained
  3. Low sodium Soy sauce - 2tsp
  4. Rice Vinegar - 2tsp
  5. Rice Wine (or Mirin) - 1tsp
  6. Oil - 1tsp
  7. Garlic - 1 cloves finely minced
  8. Cornstarch - 1tbsp
  9. For the Sauce:
  10. Low sodium vegetable broth - ½cup
  11. Sugar - 2tbsp
  12. Low sodium Soy sauce - 1 ½tbsp
  13. Rice Wine (Mirin) - 4tsp
  14. Rice Vinegar - 2tsp
  15. Sesame Oil - 2tsp
  16. Corn Starch - 2tsp
  17. Tomato paste - 1 ½tsp
  18. Sambal Oelek chili paste - ½tsp (optional)
  19. Oil - 2tsp
  20. Green Onions - 4 green parts chopped
  21. Garlic - 1 clove finely minced
  22. Grated - ½ inch finely grated
  23. Accompaniments:
  24. White or Brown Rice - 2cups (I made Shanghai Fried Rice)
  25. For Crispy Tofu:

  33. Cornstarch - 1tbsp
  34. For the Sauce:
  35. Low sodium vegetable broth - cup
  36. Sugar - 2tbsp
  37. Low sodium Soy sauce - 1tbsp
  38. Rice Wine (Mirin) - 4tsp
  39. Rice Vinegar - 2tsp
  40. Sesame Oil - 2tsp
  41. Corn Starch - 2tsp
  42. Tomato paste - 1tsp
  43. Sambal Oelek chili paste - tsp (optional)
  44. Oil - 2tsp
  45. Green Onions - 4 green parts chopped
  46. Garlic - 1 clove finely minced
  47. Grated - inch finely grated
  48. Accompaniments:
  49. White or Brown Rice - 2cups (I made Shanghai Fried Rice)

Instructions

  1. To make Crispy Tofu: Slice tofu into 2 slabs. Wrap tofu slabs in paper towel and place between 2 cutting boards. Put some weight, on top of the cutting board and press for 30 minutes (or up to 4 hours).
  2. In a container, combine soy sauce, vinegar, mirin, oil, garlic and ginger. Add tofu and toss to coat. Marinate for at least 30 minutes or overnight.
  3. Preheat the oven to 350°F and coat a baking sheet with cooking spray.
  4. Sift cornstarch over tofu and turn to coat evenly. Spread tofu on baking sheet.
  5. Baking 30~40 minutes or until firm and crispy, turning several times to brown all sides.
  6. To make General Tso's Sauce: Whisk together broth, sugar, soy sauce, mirin, vinegar, sesame oil, corn starch, tomato paste, sambal oelek (if using) in a small bowl. Set aside.
  7. Heat 1tbsp oil in a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat. Add green onions, garlic and ginger, stir fry 1 minute. Add broth mixture and cook for 1 more minute, or till it is thick.
  8. Stir in the crisp tofu. Mix well and cook for 1~2 minutes.
  9. Serve with steamed broccoli and rice.

awesome share......I am trying hard to make Tofu a menu regular in y household.....this is a winner 4 sure
