Janta podapitha is a famous traditional recipe of Odisha. It is a cake made with rice and jaggery specially on the occassion of Raja festival. It is also one of the Maha prasad served to lord Jagannath.

Ingredients Serving: 6

  1. Rice-500gram
  2. Grated coconut- half of a medium sized coconut
  3. Jaggery-150gram
  4. Ghee-2tbsp
  5. Sliced coconut-remaining half of the coconut
  6. Black pepper powder -1/2tbsp
  7. cardamom powder-1/2tbsp
  8. Tej patta -2-3
  9. ginger chopped-1inch
  10. salt -1/2tbsp
  11. banana leaf-1
  12. water -1glass


  1. Soak rice for 1hour. Wash and drain water and put it in a grinder and grind it into a fine paste.The consistency must be watery.
  2. Boil the water. Add salt, ghee, jaggery, cardamom powder,black pepper powder, chopped ginger,tej patta,grated and chopped coconut.
  3. When it starts boiling add the rice paste in the water and mix continuously so that no lumps to be formed.
  4. Stir it in a low flame about 10 min till it becomes a soft dough.
  5. Switch off the flame and allow it to cool down. Knead gently with your hand for 5min.
  6. Wash the banana leaf and roast it in the flame otherwise it will break.
  7. In a heavy bottomed vessel grease it with ghee and placed the banana leaf at the bottom.
  8. Then put the dough by garnishing some chopped coconut over it. Bake it in low flame for about 45min by covering the lid.
  9. After 45min check by inserting a toothpick . After cooling down removed it and cut into slices and enjoy.
  10. You can store it for 2-3days.
