ABOUT Bisi Bele Bath(Bhat) RECIPE

Bisi bele bhat is a traditional and very popular dish from Karnatka.It is served as a main meal along with some papad and pickle. Can be eaten as it is because it is spicy and flavourful dish. Bisi bele bhat powder has all the spices iincluding marathi moggu.There is no onion ,garlic and tomato used in this dish.Bisi means hot,bele means lentils or dal and bhat means rice.This recipe as the name suggests should be served hot.This dish is undoubtedly a boon for those who do not eat onion and garlics. .

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. Rice 3/4 cup
  2. 1/4 cup masoor dal
  3. Salt 1 tsp
  4. 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  5. Water 2 Glasses
  6. Tamarind lemon sized ball
  7. Jaggery 1 tsp
  8. Coconut Milk 1 Cup
  9. Vegetables
  10. Ghee 1 tbsp
  11. Fistful of green peas
  12. Beans 8 numbers
  13. Capsicum 1/2 cubed in small pieces
  14. Carrot 1/2 diced
  15. Salt 1/2 tsp
  16. Coconut Milk 1 Cup
  17. Tempering
  18. Ghee 1 tbsp
  19. Curry leaves 8
  20. Dry chillies 2
  21. For Bisi bele bhat powder
  22. Dry coconut 1 tbsp
  23. Black pepper 1/2 tsp
  24. Guntur chillies 5
  25. Chana dal 1 tbsp
  26. Jeera 1 tsp
  27. Cloves 1/2 tsp
  28. Cardamom 6
  29. Mace 1 inch
  30. Marathi Moggu 6
  31. Cinnamon stick 1 inch
  32. Coriander seeds crushed 1 tbsp
  33. Methi seeds 1 tsp

Instructions

  1. Roast all the dry spices for bisi bele bhat powder.Roast chana dal and coriander seeds separately. Ground them together to fine powder. Use 1 tbsp of this powder in this recipe. Keep rest of the powder in an airtight container.
  2. Wash and soak rice for 20 minutes.
  3. Wash and pressure cook dal adding 1/2 tsp salt and 2 cups water till cooked.
  4. Cook rice in 2 cups of water separately.
  5. Mash dal to smooth consistency and add to rice.If rice are too big mash them also a little bit.
  6. Soak tamarind in half cup of water.
  7. Squeeze out the pulp from tamarind.Add bisibele bhat powder,jaggery and salt.Mix well.
  8. Heat pan with 1 tbsp of ghee.Add vegetables add salt and saute them for 5 minutes till cooked.
  9. Pour the above tamarind and jaggery mixture
  10. Add mashed dal and rice.
  11. Give it a nice boil for 5 minutes.
  12. Add in coconut milk.
  13. Prepare tadka.Heat 1 tbsp ghee.Add cashews and then curry leaves.Add chillies ,mustard seeds and hing.
  14. Add to the bisibele bhat.
  15. Serve hot with papad and pickle.
