Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 2 ripe tomatoes
  2. 1 large onion
  3. 1/2 inch dried tamarind
  4. 3 tablespoon oil
  5. 1 teaspoon black mustard seeds
  6. 1 large broken dry red chilli
  7. Salt to taste
  8. 6-8 curry leaves
  9. 1 teaspoon sambhar powder
  10. a pinch of asafoetida powder

Instructions

  1. Rinse and chop the tomatoes roughly
  2. Peel and chop the onion too
  3. Heat 2 tablespoon oil in a wok
  4. Add the chopped onion, tomatoes and tamarind
  5. Saute for 2 minutes on low heat and turn off the heat
  6. Let the mix cool off for a while and then blend it into a puree
  7. Transfer the puree back in the wok Add salt,sambhar powder and mix
  8. Cook on low heat as the mix thickens (you will see it boiling and even spluttering at times)
  9. Once the mix reaches the desired chutney consistency, turn off heat and transfer the chutney to a serving bowl
  10. Heat the remaining oil in a tadka pan
  11. Add curry leaves,mustard seeds,asafoetida and dry red chilli
  12. Let the tadka splutter
  13. Take it off heat and immediately add it to the chutney
  14. Serve the chutney with piping hot idlis,dosas,utappams,etc
