Idli and Uthappam

Ingredients to make Idli and Uthappam

  • 1 cup : Whole white urad dal
  • 21/2 cup : Idli rice
  • 1 teaspoon : rock salt
  • oil for Uthappam
  • 2 tablespoon : onion chopped
  • 1 : tomato cubed
  • 1 tablespoon : ginger chopped
  • 2 tablespoons : coriander leaves chopped
  • 1 teaspoon : Green chilli chopped

How to make Idli and Uthappam

  1. Wash idli rice two or three times until water runs clear.
  2. Wash urad dal two or three times until water runs clear.
  3. Soak both of them separately in fresh water for four hours.
  4. In a wet stone grinder add soaked rice and grind coarse.
  5. Remove it to a bowl.
  6. Grind Urad dal to fine paste, add to the grind rice batter and mix good.
  7. Cover with a lid and keep the batter in a warm place for fermenting.
  8. Depending upon the climate it will take 8 hours and more in fermenting.
  9. Add salt and mix the batter.
  10. Apply oil to idli plates , pour batter and steam for 12 minutes in idli cooker.
  11. Remove with a spoon and enjoy with chutney, Sambar
  12. For Uthappam, Heat iron dosa pan , add oil and wipe it with cut onion.
  13. Pour batter , spread with a spoon , sprinkle chopped onion,tomato, chilli, coriander and ginger.
  14. With a spoon pour oil on uthappam , cover with a plate and cook on medium for two minutes.
  15. Turn the uthappam and cook for one minute.
  16. Now uthappam is ready. Serve hot with chutney and Sambar.

My Tip:

Grind batter thickly.Add salt only after fermentation.
