ABOUT Tiranga idli RECIPE

My kids love idlis and I keep experimenting with them. Here they are infused with carrots and spinach to give the desired colour. Also a pinch of food colour too. I used my daughter's geography map stencil to get the shape :)

Ingredients Serving: 6

  1. Urad dal - 1/2 cup
  2. Idli rawa - 2 cups
  3. salt as per needed
  4. Water for soaking and grinding
  5. Grated carrots - 1 cup
  6. Spinach blanched - 1 bunch
  7. Pinch of orange and green colour ( optional)


  1. Wash and soak dal and rawa separately for about 7 hours.
  2. Drain water.
  3. Grind each one to a thick paste.
  4. Mix both batters and leave it to ferment for around 12 hours.
  5. Now grind the carrots and spinach separately.
  6. Divide batter into three parts and add the pastes to get desired textures.Here you can add the colours too.
  7. Now take a dhokla plate or any flat plate and make the idlis.
  8. After they cool down ; use the stencil and a sharp pointed knife to give the shapes.
  9. Serve with chutney.
