This is a traditional recipe of Odisha which is specially prepare during winter. This is nothing but a tomato gravy with dates.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. tomato -4 ( medium to big size)
  2. dates -8-10
  3. Chopped onion-1
  4. Ginger, garlic chilli paste-1 tsp
  5. salt as per taste
  6. Sugar-4 tsp
  7. Curry leaves
  8. Punch phuton-1/2 tsp
  9. Roasted cumin powder-1/2 tsp
  10. turmeric powder-1/2 tsp
  11. chilli powder-1/2 tsp
  12. Grated coconut ( optional)
  13. mustard oil-2 tsp
  14. Hing-1/4 tsp
  15. Water-1.5 cup


  1. Chopped the tomatoes.
  2. In a pan heat oil and add punch phuton and hing in it.
  3. When the mustard in the punch photon crackle then add curry leaves, ginger garlic chilli paste and saute for 1 minute and then add chopped onion in it.
  4. When the lion becomes translucent then add chopped tomato in it along with salt, turmeric and chill powder and cover it.
  5. After sometime the tomatoes become slender then add water and allow it to boil.
  6. Then add the dates in it and cook for sometime and then add sugar and roasted cumin powder and mix it well.
  7. Your tomato khajur khatta is now ready . Serve it with rice.
