Rohu fish cooked in mustard and poppy seed gravy

Macher jhaal

Ingredients to make Macher jhaal

  • 250 GM Rohu fish fillet
  • For gravy
  • 1 small tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp black mustard seed
  • 1/2 tbsp yellow mustard seed
  • 1 tbsp poppy seeds
  • 2 to 3 green chillies
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • salt to taste
  • For tempering
  • 1 tsp nigella seeds
  • 2 green chillies
  • For marinating fish
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • A pinch salt
  • mustard oil for cooking.

How to make Macher jhaal

  1. Wash the fish fillet. Apply turmeric red chilli powder and salt. Keep aside for 15 min.
  2. In a bowl take black and yellow mustard seed, green chillies, poppy seed, turmeric, red chilli powder and salt together. Add 1/2 cup hot water into it. Keep for 30 min. Then make a fine paste of it.
  3. Heat mustard oil in a pan. When smokey. Reduce the heat and add fish. Fry till golden. Keep aside.
  4. Reduce the oil. Add nigella seeds and green chilli. Add tomato paste. Cook till oil separate. Now add the mustard paste. Cook for a minute or two. Add 1/2 cup hot water. And let it boil.
  5. Add fried fish into the curry. Cook for 5 minutes. Serve. Hot with steamed rice.
