Instant Rava / Suji Idli

Ingredients to make Instant Rava / Suji Idli

  • Suji - 1 cup
  • curd - 1 cup
  • Rice flour - 1/2 cup
  • water as needed to make batter
  • onion - 1 chopped
  • carrot - 1 grated
  • Green chilli - 2 chopped or minced
  • ginger - 1 tbsp grated
  • mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • chana dal - 1 tsp
  • White urad dal - 1 tsp
  • salt to taste
  • Red chilli powder to taste
  • turmeric powder to taste
  • baking soda - 2-1/2 tsp
  • oil for greasing idli stand
  • coriander leaves a handful

How to make Instant Rava / Suji Idli

  1. In a mixing bowl add suji, rice flour, salt, curd and mix well. Add in water as per need to make the batter of medium consistency. Batter should not be too thick nor too thin. Set aside for 15 minutes.
  2. Heat oil in kadai. Add mustard and cumin seeds and let it sizzle for a minute.
  3. Add in ginger and both dals. Fry it for few seconds. Add in onion fry till golden. Add grated carrots and mix well. Let it cook for 3 minutes. Add in red chilli powder and turmeric powder. Mix well.
  4. Add this to the batter and mix well. Add in lots of coriander leaves and mix well.
  5. Add in baking soda and mix well.
  6. Heat water in idli cooker and grease idli stand with oil. Pour the batter with a spoon in the idli stand.
  7. Now when the water is boiled slow the flame and place idli stand inside the cooker and cover it. Steam it on high flame for 10 minutes.
  8. Switch off the gas and take out the idli stand.
  9. Now remove idlis with the help of a knife. Repeat the same process for rest of the batter.
  10. Serve hot.

My Tip:

Idli can also be made in the microwave for 3 minutes. But will not be fluffy. You may add vegetables of your choice in the batter.
