ABOUT Aam dal/ Split red gram with raw mango RECIPE

This aam dal is the traditional Bengali dal prepared mainly in summers particularly the day before Bengali New Year.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Arhar dal 250 grams washed
  2. 1/2 raw mango cut into cubes
  3. ginger grated 1/2 tsp
  4. 1 bay leaf
  5. Panch phuran/ five types of Indian spice blend - fenugreek, cumin, coriander, mustard & fennel
  6. 2 dry red chilli
  7. salt to taste
  8. oil 2-3 tsp
  9. Fresh coriander leaves chopped
  10. 2 green chillies


  1. Boil the lentils with 2 cups of water
  2. In a kadai heat oil and add dry red chilli and five spices 1 tsp
  3. Add the mango and saute for 2-3 mins
  4. Transfer the boiled daal in the kadai.
  5. Add bay leaf, ginger, turmeric, salt and let it boil for 4-5 mins.
  6. Serve it with fresh coriander leaves and green chillies.
