This is an authentic South Indian recipe which has a lot of nutritional values in it. I have given my own twist to the same. It is very simple to prepare, yet tasty. Let's see how to prepare this.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Drumstick leaves - 2 cups, pressed
  2. Moong dal/toor dal or mix of both- 1/2 cup
  3. Turmeric powder- a teaspoon
  4. Salt- a teaspoon
  5. Grated fresh coconut- 1/2 cup
  6. Cumin seeds- 1.5 teaspoon
  7. Red chillies- 4 to 5
  8. Oil- 1 to 2 teaspoons
  9. Mustard seeds- 1/2 teaspoon
  10. Asafoetida- a pinch
  11. Curry leaves- 4 to 5 leaves
  12. Onion- 1, cubed
  13. Garlic- 3 cloves
  14. Salt to taste
  15. Tomato- 1 big, cubed


  1. Pressure cook moong dal/ toor dal along with some salt and turmeric powder. Cook until mushy.
  2. Meanwhile, clean the drumstick leaves, chop onion, garlic and tomato.
  3. Grind together coconut, cumin seeds and red chillies in to a smooth paste
  4. Heat oil in a vessel and add mustard seeds. When they crackle, add asafoetida and curry leaves
  5. Add onions, garlic and salt. Cook until onions are transparent.
  6. Add tomatoes and cook until tomatoes are fully cooked and mushy.
  7. Add drumstick leaves. Let it shrink. Do not cook more.
  8. Now, add the cooked dal and mix well.
  9. Add the coconut paste. Check for seasoning. Bring this to one boil and turn off the heat.
  10. Close and keep for 5 to 10 minutes, so that the flavors will incorporate well.
  11. Serve hot with rice.
