Muringa Poovu thoran is a delicious dish served with rice. They are loaded with lots of nutrients. This dish tastes similar to mushroom and you can add scrambled egg to the thoran to make it tastier.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 1 cup drumstick flowers
  2. 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  3. 1/2 teaspoon chilly powder
  4. Salt to taste
  5. Few drops of water
  6. For grinding :-
  7. 1/2 cup grated Coconut
  8. 2 shallots, sliced
  9. 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  10. For tempering :-
  11. 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  12. 2 dry red chillies, broken
  13. 1 sprig curry leaves
  14. 1 tablespoon coconut oil


  1. Separate the drumstick flowers from stalks. Place them in a bowl of turmeric water. Drain after 15 minutes.
  2. Grind grated coconut, sliced shallots and cumin seeds to a coarse mixture. One or two pulses would be enough.
  3. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Splutter mustard seeds. Add the dry red chillies and curry leaves. Wait for the dry red chillies to change colour to brown.
  4. Simmer and add the drum stick flowers and salt. Sprinkle little water and cook covered for about 5 minutes.
  5. Now open the lid and add the coconut mixture. Cook covered for another 3 minutes.
  6. Remove the lid and mix the thoran well. Continue cooking stirring in between. Switch off after 2-3 minutes.
