ABOUT Chile Sopa de Chocolate (Mexican Chili & Chocolate Soup) RECIPE

A spicy, savoury soup that incorporates the flavours of hot chile, garlic, spices and chocolate!

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. Ancho chile or Dry Red Chilies - 3-7
  2. Tomatoes - 2
  3. Garlic - 8-10 cloves
  4. Onions - 1 chopped
  5. Syracuse spice - 1 tbsp
  6. Semisweet chocolate - 10 gm
  7. Salt to taste
  8. Sugar - 1/2 tsp
  9. Lemon juice - of half a lemon
  10. Fried tortilla strips and sour cream for garnish
  11. Fresh cilantro for garnish

Instructions

  1. Start by brushing some oil on the tomatoes and roasting or grilling them in an oven/stove or microwave for 15 mins or until the skin is blistered and the tomatoes have softened.
  2. Let the tomatoes cool. Chop the onions and ready the other ingredients.
  3. Fry the onions and garlic until golden. Let cool.
  4. Discard the outer skin of the tomatoes.
  5. Ready the spice paste by mixing it with a tbsp of hot water.
  6. Grind the fried onions, garlic, chilies and tomatoes with the spice paste in a blender or mixer. Add water until you have a smooth paste.
  7. Heat a pan and tip the blended paste in, let it cook on low flame for a few mins.
  8. Season with salt and sugar and mix well.
  9. Add a cup of water and the chocolate. Mix until the chocolate has melted.
  10. Mix well.
  11. Switch off the flame and add the lemon juice.
  12. Give it a final mix.
  13. Garnish with fried tortilla chips, sour cream, cilantro and a lemon wedge. Enjoy it hot.
