Dal Bharwan Karele

Ingredients to make Dal Bharwan Karele

  • Bitter gourd 3 medium sized
  • chana dal (soaked for 4 to 5 hours)
  • Sliced onion 1 medium
  • Sliced tomato 1 medium
  • coriander powder 1 tsp
  • Red chili powder 1 tsp
  • cumin powder 1/2 tsp
  • Garam masala powder 1/2 tsp
  • fenugreek seed 6 to 7
  • kalonji 1/4 tsp
  • turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
  • Desi ghee 1/2 tsp
  • oil 4 tbsp
  • water 3 cups
  • 3 tbsp chopped coriander leaves for garnishing

How to make Dal Bharwan Karele

  1. Slice bitter gourd in 2 halves lengthwise, remove seeds and wash thoroughly
  2. Boil bitter gourd with salt and enough water for 10 minutes to reduce bitterness.
  3. Heat oil in a wok, add fenugreek seed , saute for few seconds add kalonji and cook few seconds.
  4. Add onions, saute till golden brown . Add chana dal, masalas and salt . Mix well
  5. Now add tomatoes and cook for 4-5 minutes. .
  6. Add 1 cup water and cook until dal is done. Finally add ghee and mix
  7. Stuff this mixture into bitter gourd.
  8. Garnish with coriander leaves. Serve hot with parathas.
