ABOUT Vattayappam RECIPE

Vattayappam is a traditional kerala breakfast item served with hot mutton or beef stew and roasted coconut beef curry

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Raw rice 3 cup
  2. Grated coconut 1.5 cup
  3. Boiled rice half cup
  4. Sugar 2 to 3 tablespoon
  5. Yeast half teaspoon
  6. Coconut water
  7. Salt
  8. Raisins
  9. Cashews


  1. Soak raw rice for 5 to 8 hours
  2. Grind soaked rice,grated coconut , boiled rice salt and sugar into fine paste and consistancy of dosa batter.
  3. Ferment the yeast in hot water.
  4. Add fermented yeast and coconut water to the batter and mix it well.
  5. Let the batter sit for 6 hour (Time changes As per the climate)
  6. Place steamer on stove . Add desired amount of water. Pour the batter into moulds of prefered shapes. Steam for 5 minutes Garnish the rice cake with raisins and cashews Steam for another 5 minutes
  7. Take out the vattayappam after cooling
