ABOUT Chettinad Vaazhakka Dry Masala RECIPE

A simple yet delicious spicy raw banana(vaazhakka)masala made in Tamilnadu Chettinad style. This can be made in dry or semigravy or gravy consistency as desired.

Ingredients Serving: 3

  1. Raw banana 2
  2. Onion 1
  3. Tomato 1
  4. Oil 2 tbsp or as req.
  5. Mustard seeds 1 tsp
  6. Cumin seeds 1 tsp
  7. Curry leaves 1 sprig
  8. Coriander leaves(optional)
  9. Salt as req.
  10. Water as req.
  11. To grind: Coconut 2 handful
  12. Green chilli 2
  13. Ginger a small piece
  14. Garlic 5 cloves
  15. Shallots 5
  16. Pepper 1 tsp
  17. Cumin seeds 1 tsp
  18. Saunf 1 tsp
  19. Dried red chilli 3 to 5

Instructions

  1. In a pan, pour little oil, and saute the raw banana chopped lengthwise for a few mins. Remove and transfer to a plate.
  2. In the same pan, pour little more oil, and temper with mustard seeds, cumin seeds and curry leaves.
  3. Now, add the fine chopped onion and saute well. Next add the fine chopped tomato and again saute well till it becomes mushy.
  4. Add the sauted raw banana pieces now, and mix well for a few mins.
  5. Meanwhile, grind the 'to grind' ingredients to a slightly coarse paste(If you need a semi gravy or gravy, then grind into a smooth paste and add water accordingly).
  6. Add the ground masala to the pan, add salt and little water, and cook for a few mins in simmer after closing with a lid.
  7. When the raw banana is well merged with the masala, sprinkle some coriander leaves and switch off the stove. That's it.
  8. Your delicious spicy chettinad vaazhakka dry masala is ready to be served with hot rice.
