ABOUT Purple sweet potato Mochi Modak RECIPE

Mochis are Japanese rice balls served with some sweet sauce. Whereas modaks are Maharashtrian sweet rice dumplings filled with coconut jaggery mixture. I’ve combined both basic ideas to shape a new fusion dessert.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. For covering : 1 cup boiled sweet potatoes ( I’ve used purple variety)
  2. 1/2 cup rice flour
  3. 1/4or less boiling water
  4. a pinch of salt
  5. For Filling: 1 cup fresh desiccated coconut
  6. 1/2 cup jaggery grated
  7. 1tsp khuskhus
  8. 1/2 tsp cardamom powder
  9. 1 tbsp chopped dry fruits- optional

  1. In a saucepan, cook mixture of desiccated coconut+ jaggery+ khuskhus+ cardamom powder+ chopped dry fruits for 10 minutes or till it form a thick mixture.
  2. Mash boiled sweet potatoes. Add in rice flour and salt. By gradually adding boiled water, make a soft dough. Knead well
  3. Take a small lemon sized portion of dough. Shape into a ball. Make a small depression in middle and fill in a spoonful of sweet coconut mixture. Close and shape into a ball again.
  4. Prepare all balls in same manner. With above ingredients, one can get around 7-10 Balls depending on size.
  5. In a steamer, steam the filled balls for 15 minutes or till they are not sticky to touch.
  6. Serve with sliced almonds and /or ghee! This recipe has natural purple colour of the sweet potato. No artificial colours used.
