Pearl spot is a fish which all fish lovers crave for when they visit Kerala. This fish is fried in homemade virgin coconut oil(oil which is made by boiling coconut milk).It adds a unique flavour and aroma to this fish fry

Ingredients to make Kerala special Pearl spot (Karimeen) fried in virgin coconut oil

  • Pearl spot fish 2 large sized
  • ginger garlic paste 1 table spoon
  • Crushed pepper 1 tea spoon
  • Roasted cumin powder 1 tea spoon
  • Crushed red chillies 1 tea spoon
  • shallots 5 nos
  • curry leaves 2 sprigs
  • salt as per taste
  • turmeric powder 1tea spoon
  • Koku/Kudampuli 2 soaked in hot water
  • Virgin coconut oil for frying

How to make Kerala special Pearl spot (Karimeen) fried in virgin coconut oil

  1. Grind all the ingredients into a fine paste with the Kudampuli/koku water
  2. Marinate the cleaned fishes with the Masala paste and keep aside for one hour
  3. Heat virgin coconut oil in a kadai and put a sprig of curry leaf in it. Deep fry the fish one by one in medium heat.
  4. Serve it hot with onion rings and lemon wedges

My Tip:

You can use any oil but virgin coconut oil tastes best for this fish fry
