makkan peda is a sweet famous in Arcot, a small town in vellore. this sweet is rich with dry fruits and nuts stuffed inside. though it resembles close to gulab jamun,the taste and texture sure differs.

Ingredients Serving: 6

  1. 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  2. 1/4 cup+2tbsp mawa/khoya
  3. 1 tbsp curd
  4. 1 tbsp ghee
  5. 1/8 tsp soda
  6. 1/4 tsp cardamom powder
  7. 3 almonds chopped finely
  8. 3 cashews chopped finely
  9. 3 pistachios chopped finely
  10. 4 to 5 raisins finely chopped
  11. oil for deep frying
  12. for sugar syrup:
  13. 1.5 cups sugar
  14. 1.5 cups water

Instructions

  1. in a bowl take flour, khoya, ghee, curd and soda, mix well
  2. sprinkle water (approx 1 to 1.5 tbsp) and knead a dough
  3. cover and keep aside for 15 minutes
  4. for stuffing:
  5. take a bowl, add cashews, almonds, pistachios, raisins and cardamom powder
  6. mix well, stuffing is ready
  7. for sugar syrup:
  8. add sugar and water in a kadai and bring to boil
  9. once it starts boiling, lower the flame and let it simmer for 5 minutes
  10. turn off the flame and keep aside
  11. now to make pedas, knead the dough again gently
  12. roll into equal sized balls and flatten slightly
  13. put a little of the prepared stuffing in the center
  14. gather the sides and cover the stuffing
  15. pinch to seal and roll it
  16. flatten slightly and make pedas
  17. heat oil in a kadai on medium flame and fry all the pedas on medium flame until dark golden brown
  18. once done, drain and add to sugar syrup
  19. let it soak for at least 1 hour
  20. serve with garnish of chopped nuts
