ABOUT Mamma's Sundakaai(Turkey Berry) Vathakulambu RECIPE

One of my Amma's specliaty which is ever ever loved and appreciated by all.This vathakulambu is made out of dried Turkey berry(sundaikaai vathal in Tamil). Turkey Berry is processed and added to kolambu with tamarind pulp,and a mixture of masala powders. It's an aunthentic way of preparation prepared by Tamilians in South India.

Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. Sundakaai(turkey berry) vathal 1 tablespoon
  2. Tamarind lemon size
  3. Onion 1
  4. Tomatoes 3
  5. Turmeric powder 1/4 teaspoon
  6. Vathakulampu powder 1 tablespoon
  7. Chilli powder 1/4 teaspoon
  8. Salt to taste
  9. Gingely oil 2 tablespoon
  10. Mustard seed 1/4 teaspoon
  11. Urad dhal 1/4 teaspoon
  12. Curry leaves 2sprigs
  13. Asfoetida 1/4 teaspoon


  1. Fry Sunda vathal in medium oil and keep it aside.
  2. Add 1/4 cup water to tamarind and squeeze the pulp out of it.
  3. Add gingely oil in a pan and temper with mustard seed,urad dal and asfoetida .
  4. Add onion and saute for a while.
  5. Add tomatoes and cook till it becomes mushy.
  6. Add all the masalas powders and salt to taste.
  7. Let it cook for few minutes.
  8. Add fried Sunda vathal to the the boiling kulambu.
  9. Let it cook till the oil floats above.
  10. Finally add curry leaves and serve hot with steamed rice,idli or dosa.
