ABOUT Katla Macher Kalia RECIPE

Katla macher kalia is a traditional bengali fish preparation. This preparation is very simple and easy. My mom's fish curry is the best. She made frequently this fish curry recipe and would serve it 2 or 3 times a week. Mom would also make it when someone visited our home.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. Katla fish 4 pieces
  2. 1 medium onion paste
  3. 1/2 tsp garlic paste
  4. 1 tsp Ginger paste
  5. 1 green chilli paste
  6. 1/2 cup curd or yogurt
  7. 1,1/2 tsp cumin powder
  8. 1/2 tsp coriander powder
  9. 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  10. 1 tsp turmeric powder
  11. 1/4 tsp garam masala powder
  12. Salt according to taste
  13. 1/2 tsp Sugar (Optional)
  14. Mustard Oil 2 tbsp
  15. For Tempering :
  16. 1, dry red chilli
  17. 1 small piece Cinnamon stick
  18. 2, cloves
  19. 1, green cardamom
  20. 1/4 tsp cumin seeds

Instructions

  1. Wash fish pieces properly and marinate them with salt and 1/2 tsp turmeric powder. Set aside for sometimes.
  2. Heat oil in a pan, add the fish pieces and shallow fry on high heat turning sides,till well cooked. Keep the fried fish aside.
  3. Mix curd, sugar, chilli powder, cumin powder, coriander powder and turmeric powder together.
  4. To the remaining oil add the tempering ingredients and fry for few seconds on low flame.
  5. Now add onion-ginger-garlic-green chilli paste and fry till the raw smell of the masala goes away.
  6. Now add curd mixture.
  7. Fry the masala properly on medium flame till oil begins to separate.
  8. Pour 1/2 cup hot water and salt.
  9. Now add fried fish pieces and garam masala powder. Cook covered for 3-4 minutes on medium flame.
  10. Now uncovered the pan and transfer the prepared fish curry to a serving plate.
  11. Serve hot with steamed rice.
