ABOUT South Indian Style Beetroot Poriyal RECIPE

Beetroot Poriyal is a simple yet flavorful and colorful onion garlic free dish in which cubed beetroots are stir fried with seasoning. It serves as a delicious side dish with chapati or poori for lunch and serves as a healthy kids lunch box option.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 2 medium Beetroot finely chopped
  2. 2 tbsp Bengal gram dal (Chana dal)
  3. 2 tbsp split and skinned black gram (White Urad dal)
  4. 2 tbsp scrapped fresh Coconut
  5. 2 tbsp Oil
  6. 1/4 tsp cumin seeds
  7. Pinch of Asafoetida
  8. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  9. 1 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  10. Salt to taste
  11. 2 sprigs of fresh Curry leaves

Instructions

  1. Wash and soak the Chana dal and Urad dal for 10 minutes in lukewarm water. Meanwhile peel and finely chop the beetroot into cubes.
  2. Heat a wok on medium flame and add 2 tbsp oil to it. Add the cumin seeds followed by fresh curry leaves. Add a pinch of asafoetida and turmeric. Add the soaked and drained Chana dal and Urad dal. Stir for a minute or so.
  3. Add the chopped Beetroot and mix well. Add salt and red chili powder. Mix properly, cover and cook for 5-7 minutes. Lastly add the scraped fresh Coconut. Stir well and put off the flame.
  4. Serve with Chapati or Poori .
