ABOUT Gujarati Kadhi RECIPE

Sweet and sour kadhi with strong flavour of cinnamon adds an extra flavour to this simple tasteful recipe to be served with some steamed rice.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. for the kadhi:
  2. 1 cup fresh curd (dahi or yogurt)
  3. 2 to 2.5 cups water
  4. 4 tablespoons gram flour (besan)
  5. ½ tablespoon ginger-green chili paste or crushed [ ½ inch ginger & 1 to 2 green chilies]
  6. 1 tablespoon sugar or jaggery, add more for more sweetness
  7. salt as required
  8. coriander leaves for garnishing
  9. for tempering gujarati kadhi:
  10. 1 inch cinnamon stick (dalchini)
  11. 2 cloves (lavang)
  12. 1 sprig curry leaves (kadi patta)
  13. 1 generous pinch asafoetida (hing)
  14. 2 broken red chilies, deseeded
  15. ½ teaspoon cumin seeds (jeera)
  16. ½ teaspoon mustard seeds (rai)
  17. ¼ teaspoon fenugreek seeds (methi ke dane)
  18. 1 tablespoon oil or ghee


  1. mix the chickpea flour/besan, green chilly-ginger paste, yogurt, sugar and salt with water. beat to a smooth mixture.
  2. fry all the ingredients meant for tempering. add the yogurt-water mixture.
  3. give a boil first and then simmer for 5 minutes more or as required.
  4. continue to stir in between to avoid lumps from getting formed.
  5. garnish kadhi with chopped coriander and serve hot gujarati kadhi with rice or phulka.
