Onam olan is traditional staple recipe of kerala and made especially during Onam sadhya meal and this occupies a main place in the meal and its so easy to prepare and the taste literally takes you to kerala where ever you are

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. Ash gourd diced one cup
  2. Lobia or black/brown eyed pea 1/4cup
  3. Green chilli 1
  4. Thick coconut milk 3/4cup
  5. Thin coconut milk 1cup
  6. Fennel 1/2tsp
  7. Mustard seeds 1/4tsp
  8. Onion chopped 1tbsp
  9. Coconut oil 2tsp + 1tsp
  10. Curry leaves 1sprig
  11. salt as needed

Instructions

  1. Shred 3/4cup coconut
  2. Add fennel seeds one green chilli to the coconut and extract one cup thick milk by adding 3/4cup water
  3. After extracting return the coconut to mixie
  4. Now add 1cup water and extract milk
  5. Soak lobia for overnight or six hours . I personally used a mix of fresh and dry.( If using fresh. Give 2whistles in pressure cooker with 1 1/2 cup water)
  6. Pressure cook it for 3 to 4 whistles and let the steam release on own
  7. Dice ash gourd and take in a bowl
  8. Now add the thin coconut milk cooked lobia to the ash gourd bowl
  9. In a pan add one tsp coconut oil then add mustard seeds curry leaves and onion. Saute for a minute
  10. Now reduce the stove to below medium and add the coconut and veggie mixed bowl to pan
  11. Cook till the ash gourd is done in medium flame. Stir in middle
  12. Now add the thick coconut milk and keep stirring let the raw smell leaves and take out just before it start to boil
  13. Switch off stove .now drizzle one tsp coconut oil and serve with hot rice and subzi
  14. Original recipe doesn't make use of tempering or adding onion and fennel
  15. But this way it definitely tastes with different flavour
