About Surti Locho Recipe

A very healthy and tasty Gujarati breakfast/brunch recipe. Recipe is inspired by Nishamadhulika ji.

Surti Locho

Ingredients to make Surti Locho

  • chana dal- 1 cup(soaked for 5 hours)
  • urad dal- 1/3 cup(soaked for 5 hours)
  • Poha- 1/2 cup(soaked for 15 minutes)
  • oil- 4 tbsp.
  • green chillies- 1(chopped)
  • hing- a pinch
  • turmeric Powder- 1/4 tsp.
  • red chilli Powder- 1/2 tsp.
  • salt-1 tsp.(or as per taste)
  • sugar- 1 tsp.
  • Black pepper Powder- 1/2 tsp.
  • Juice of a lemon (2tsp.)
  • coriander Leaves(chopped)- 2 tsp.
  • tomato- 1 (medium)
  • Eno- 2 packets (2 tsp.)

How to make Surti Locho

  1. Grind the soaked chana dal to a coarse paste and urad dal to a very fine paste. Also grind the poha, tomato and green chilli with the urad dal.
  2. Mix both dals in a bowl along with all other ingredients and 3 tbsp. of the oil.
  3. Grease a container with oil, in which you are going to steam it. Also prepare a steamer (cooker or a large vessel) with enough water.
  4. In the end, mix in the eno and whisk once again quickly and pour in the greased tin and steam for 20 minutes on medium high flame.
  5. Check after 20 minutes and if it's not cooked properly, steam accordingly.
  6. After it is steamed, serve it with curd and chutney/ketchup and garnish with chopped coriander leaves.

My Tip:

Add Eno in the end. Make sure that the tin doesn't touch the bottom and sides of the steamer. Always steam in a large cooker/wide pan so that it gets enough area for the steam to spread.
