ABOUT Akki Rotti aka Rice Rotti RECIPE

Akki Rotti , is the traditional dish prepared at every Kannada house. This dish carries almost a 100 years of tradition with it and can even be prepared using Ragi Flour, instead of Rice. As rice is a staple food of we Kannadigas, so Akki Rotti is a favourite breakfast in every household of Karnataka.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. 2 cups Rice flour
  2. 1/2 cup grated Coconut
  3. 1/2 cup grated Carrot
  4. 1 tbsp finely chopped coriander leaves
  5. 1 tbsp finely chopped curry leaves
  6. 1/2 tbsp Jeera
  7. 1 tbsp Salt
  8. Water
  9. Oil


  1. In a big mixing bowl, put all ingredients (except water and oil) and mix well.
  2. Now divide the flour mixture into 4 parts and take 1 part in a small mixing bowl.
  3. Add a little more than 1/4 cup of water and make it into 2 soft dough balls. Ideally with that 1 part, 2 rottis can be made.
  4. Now take a Kadai (please avoid using non-stick Kadai. We use the iron or aluminium kadai at home) and pour 1 tbsp of oil into it and smear thewhole kadai with it.
  5. Take 1 ball of the dough and place it in the center and using your 4 fingers gently press the dough and spread it until it takes the shape of the Kadai.
  6. Make a small hole in the centre of the Kadai and pour 1/2 tbsp of oil into it and also 1 tbsp onthe sides.
  7. Now place the kadai on the gas stove and cover it with a plate. Cook over medium heat for about 2-4 mins
  8. Now using a slotted turner ladle, remove the rotti from kadai
  9. For the rest of the dough, cool the kadai by placing the back side of the kadai under running water and then spread the dough on the tawa.
