Doi Maach

Ingredients to make Doi Maach

  • Rohu fish 1/2 kg cleaned descaled and cut into thick slices
  • For marination:
  • Fresh hung curd 2 cups
  • turmeric Powder 3/4 tsp
  • coriander powder 1 tsp
  • salt to taste
  • red chilli powder 1 tsp
  • lemon juice 1/2 tsp
  • mustard oil 1/2 cup
  • Green chillis 4 sliced
  • cloves 4-5
  • Green cardamom 4
  • bay leaves 2 large
  • onions 1 large chopped into thin slices

How to make Doi Maach

  1. Marinate the fish in hung curd, salt, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, lemon juice and set aside for 1 hour.
  2. Add mustard oil in a pan heat it till it starts to give out fumes.
  3. Add bay leaves, green chillies, cloves, green cardamom and allow these to splutter.
  4. Add onions and saute till brown. Add coriander powder.
  5. Add in the marinated fish with all of the marinade mixture.
  6. Cover the lid and cook for 20 minutes or till the time fish is completely cooked. Stir but be careful not to break the pieces.
  7. Serve hot with steamed rice.

My Tip:

You may like to add a little water in case you wish to have more curry. Add lemon juice only if your curd is fresh else old curd with lemon might end up making the dish too sour.
