Chinese Idli

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Suji/ Semolina- 1 cup
  2. Oil- 1 and 1/2 tbsp
  3. Salt- 3/4 tsp
  4. Curd- 1 cup
  5. Eno- 1 tsp
  6. Water- 1/2 cup (approximately)
  7. Chinese Tadka Ingredients:
  8. Oil- 3 tbsp
  9. Garlic-1 tbsp chopped and crushed
  10. Red chilli paste- 1/2 tsp
  11. 1 small sized onion- cut into half and then into thin half rings (julienned)
  12. Cabbage- 1/2 cup shredded
  13. Carrot- 1/4 cup shredded
  14. Cloves- 2 crushed
  15. tomato puree- 3 tbsp
  16. tomato ketchup- 1 tbsp
  17. Red Chilli sauce- 1 tbsp
  18. Soya sauce- 1- 1/2 tsp
  19. Pepper- 1/4 tsp
  20. Salt- 1/2 tsp


  1. To prepare the idlis, mix the suji and curd with enough water to make a thick pouring consistency batter.
  2. Add 1 tsp oil and salt to taste, mix it well and keep it aside for 10-15 minutes. Now add 1 tsp of eno, mix it properly and pour it into lined/ greased idli moulds.
  3. To cook it in a microwave, add 1/4 cup of water in a micro safe bowl. Put idli stand in it with the cover for 3 minutes. The idlis are ready!
  4. To prepare the chinese tadka, heat 3 tbsp oil in pan, then add in the garlic and red chilli paste. Stir for a minute till it's fragrant.
  5. Add the onion and stir fry till the onions turn golden in colour. Next add in the capsicum and carrot. Stir fry for 2 minutes. Then add the cabbage and stir for a few seconds.
  6. Lower the heat. Then add in the cloves, tomato puree, ketchup, red chilli sauce, soya sauce, pepper and salt. Cook for 1 minute on a low heat.
  7. Cut the 8-10 idlis into 4 pieces each and add it to the sauces. Stir fry for a minute. Adjust the salt and sauce as per taste.
  8. Serve it hot.
