ABOUT Som Tam (Thai Green Papaya Salad) RECIPE

A very famous salad from the Thai culinary repertoire. A sweet, sour, spicy and savoury medley of tastes with crunchy, crisp and tender texture. A perfect example of simple yet delicious food. Tamarind and lemon juice impart a tanginess which is perfectly balanced by the jaggery while papaya being rich in calcium, vitamin A and C is a real health booster. For this vegan version i didn't include shrimps and replaced fish sauce with soya sauce.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Green chillies - 2 tsp
  2. Jaggery - 2 tsp
  3. Tamarind pulp - 1 tsp
  4. Chilli powder- 1 tsp
  5. Soy sauce - 2 tsp
  6. Lemon juice - 2 tsp
  7. Chopped Coriander (chopped) - 2 tbsp
  8. Raw Papaya (grated) - 3 cups
  9. Tomatoes (thinly sliced) - 3/4 th cup
  10. Peanuts- 1/4 th cup( roasted and coarsely pounded)

Instructions

  1. Peel the papaya, then slice it in half and shred the papaya. Just quickly blanch them, then strain put in cold water for 1/2 hr, this will make it crisp, then drain and wrap in a muslin cloth. Refrigerate till it's ready for use.
  2. Put in the chillies, jaggery, lemon juice, soya sauce, salt, chilli powder, coriander in a blender and puree the mixture. Keep it aside.
  3. Combine all the ingredients in a serving bowl and toss it well.
  4. Healthy and delicious papaya salad is ready.
