Apple Pie

Ingredients to make Apple Pie

  • FOR THE PASTRY :115g refined flour
  • 85g unsalted butter chilled and cubed
  • a pinch of salt
  • 50 ml chilled water
  • FOR THE FILLING :450g apples sliced
  • 225g powdered sugar +a tsp extra for dusting on top
  • 10g refined flour
  • a pinch of nutmeg
  • 20g butter
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • a pinch of allspice

How to make Apple Pie

  1. To make the pastry,Take a large bowl , sieve in flour and salt ,then rub in the chilled butter with fingers till mixture resembles breadcrumbs.Mix well and slowly add chilled water to form a stiff dough(add water slowly, using less or more as per requirement)
  2. Chill for 10 minutes in the refrigerator.Roll out thinly(1/8inch).Cut two rounds, for two pies.Let rest for 5 minutes then Lift and spread out carefully over lightly buttered 9 inch pie plate, leaving a bit of a overhang as the pastry shrinks a bit during baking.
  3. Now to make filing-Sprinkle sugar, flour, cinnamon, vanilla, allspice and nutmeg over the apples and then add melted butter.Mix to coat the apple slices well.Preheat oven at 180 C.
  4. Arrange apple slices decoratively over the pie as shown in picture.
  5. Bake at 220 C for 15 minutes.Lower the temperature to 175 C and bake for 60 minutes or until apples are done and crust is golden.

My Tip:

serve with a dollop of vanilla ice cream or freshly whipped cream
