Chapathis are one of the traditional unleavened flat breads of indian cuisine. The word CHAPAT means flat in hindi. Its origin was not exactly known , but can be seen in a book written by mughal emperor Akbar in 16th century. Even few wheat grains were found in excavations in mohenja daro too. Indus valley was considered as the ancient land of wheat cultivation. Chapathis are low in calories and high in protein, fibers, vitamins and minerals.

Ingredients to make Chapathi

  • wheat flour- 2 cups
  • water-1 cup
  • salt- 1tsp
  • oil- 1 tbsp

How to make Chapathi

  1. In a mixing bowl, add 2 cups of wheat flour , salt, oil and 1 cup water and mix well.
  2. Let it rest for 1 hour to make soft chapathis ( cover with damp cloth)
  3. If we dont have time and yet we need soft chapathis? Then add i cup of boiling water into the flour and mix with a spatula.
  4. Now divide the dough into small balls and dust them in flour and flatten them into a round disc with the help of a rolling pin
  5. Heat a non stick tawa, and place chapathi's and cook on both sides.
  6. Always close the lid after each chapati is placed in the container.
  7. Enjoy with your favourite curries like stuffed brinjal or butter panner masala or chicken curry or butter chicken etc...
  8. Enjoy your healthy food and we are sure to shed a few kgs of weight in 3 months if we take 3 chapathis every night as dinner.

My Tip:

Always mix the dough ahead and leave it for 1 hour so that gluten helps to make the dough soft. On the tawa, flip to the other side of chapathi only when you see small bubbles on one side and repeat. This methods gives us very soft chapathis.
