A very special street food in Surat made with chana and potatoes. Gives tangy and sweet taste.

Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. Chana- 1/2 kg overnight
  2. Potatoes- 5 medium sized
  3. Onions- 3 medium(finely chopped)
  4. Salt- to taste
  5. Curry leaves- 20
  6. Garlic- 4 to 5 cloves (finely chopped)
  7. Green chilly- 6 to 8
  8. Coconut- 1/2
  9. Ginger- 1 inch
  10. Gram flour(besan)- 2 to 3 tbsp
  11. Tamarind jaggery(imli and gur) pulp- 1/2 cup
  12. Oil- 4 to 5 tbsp
  13. Water- 3 cup or more


  1. Wash chana properly. Drain them. Boil it in the pressure cooker with a generous amount of water and 2 tbsp salt.
  2. Wash the potatoes. Cut them in halves.Pressure cooker with water and salt. Strain it and cut them into small pieces.
  3. Grind coconut pieces with green chilli and ginger to a paste form.
  4. Imli Gur pulp: In a deep pan add 2 cups water, 1/3 cup Imli and 1/2 cup Gur. Bring it to a boil. Boil it until u see thick paste. When it gets cool, sieve it.
  5. Heat oil in a pan. Add finely chopped onions, garlic and curry leaves. Cook till you get a golden colour.
  6. Now add green chilly paste. Let it be saute for a while.
  7. In a small bowl, make a paste of besan flour with water.
  8. Add this paste in a pan.Keep stirring continuously. Otherwise it gets burn.
  9. Add chana and potatoes together. Add 2 cups of water and salt as per need and mix it very well.
  10. Now add imli and gur pulp. Mix it again. If you think its too thick then add some more water. But don't add too much. It should be thick.
  11. Enjoy this chatpati with raiwale aloo.
