Home-made moong dal puris topped with masala dal and served as Mumbai-style Dahi Batata puri.

Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. For the Puri; 1 cup moong dal flour
  2. ½ cup maida
  3. ¼ cup wheat flour
  4. 3 tablespoon oil
  5. Ice cold water as needed
  6. Salt to taste
  7. For the Dal Masala: ½ cup moong dal
  8. ½ cup chana dal
  9. 2 cups Water
  10. Salt to taste
  11. ½ cup curd , whisked
  12. 1 teaspoon sugar
  13. Pinch of chaat masala
  14. ½ teaspoon red Chili Powder
  15. 2 tablespoon sweet chutney
  16. 3 tablespoon soaked and drained Boondi
  17. 2 tablespoon mint tamarind chutney
  18. 1 large, boiled potato, cubed
  19. To garnish, nylon sev ( optional )


  1. To make Moong dal puris: Take moong dal flour, maida and whole wheat flour in a bowl.
  2. Add oil and salt.
  3. Crumble lightly using the fingertips.
  4. Using as little water as possible, knead a medium tight dough.
  5. Rest it covered for 30 minutes.
  6. Make balls, flatten it and deep fry or bake it.
  7. The puris are ready.
  8. For the dal topping-Wash and soak the dal for 2 hours.
  9. Add in salt, ½ teaspoon red chili powder and Haldi
  10. Add water .
  11. Pressure cook till soft.
  12. Let the dals cool.
  13. Add salt, sugar, chaat masala and red chili powder to the whisked curd.
  14. To serve: Place a puri on a plate.
  15. Top it up with one tablespoon dal.
  16. Pour a teaspoon of the curd on it.
  17. Add in the potatoes, onion, Sev, chutneys, Boondi and serve.
