ABOUT Daal khichdi RECIPE

A complete meal in itself,this daal khichdi is made from toovar dal and rice alongwith some dry spices and garlic,onions and tomatoes.There is no need for kadhi also with this khichdi,you can serve it with curd and papad.Very nutritious and healthy for kids as well as elderly people.Dal khichdi is served in hotels also in Mumbai.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Rice-1 cup
  2. Toovar daal-1 cup
  3. Tomato-1/2 cup
  4. Onion-1/2 cup
  5. Garlic-2 tbsp
  6. Curry Leaves-8
  7. Ghee-2 tbsp
  8. Cloves-4
  9. Black pepper-5
  10. Asafoetida
  11. Whole red chilli-2
  12. Cinnamon-2 sticks
  13. Salt
  14. Red chilli powder-1 tsp
  15. Cumin Seeds-1 tsp
  16. Turmeric-1 tsp


  1. Wash and soak rice and toovar daal together for half an hour.
  2. Take a cooker and add this soaked daal rice along with salt,turmeric and 5 cups water.
  3. Take 3 to 4 whistles and let the pressure release by itself.
  4. Chop onions and tomatoes.
  5. Take a pan and add ghee.
  6. Add cumin seeds when ghee heats up.
  7. Add asafetida,cloves,cinnamon,red chilli,black pepper,curry leaves.
  8. Saute for 30 seconds and add garlic.I have added green garlic ,you can add dry also.
  9. Now add chopped onions.Saute for 2 minutes.
  10. Add tomatoes.Cook till mushy.
  11. Now add red chilli powder and add the cooked khichdi to this.
  12. Stir and mix well.Serve hot.
