One of the traditional Mangalorean recipe which is prepared during the Christmas time

Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. 175-200gm dates finely chopped
  2. 100gm walnuts roughly chopped
  3. 100gm soft brown sugar
  4. 100gm all purpose flour
  5. 100gm butter
  6. 2 eggs
  7. 1 tsp baking powder
  8. 1/2 tsp cinnamon powder
  9. 1/4 tsp nutmeg powder
  10. 2 tsp honey
  11. pinch of salt


  1. Prepare a loaf pan – grease the insides and line with butter paper. Keep aside. Preheat the oven at 160°C.
  2. Place the chopped dates in a bowl and pour boiling water to cover them. Keep aside for 10-15minutes. Sift the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon & nutmeg powders together a couple of times and keep aside
  3. In a large mixing bowl whisk together the butter and sugar until creamy. Add one egg at a time and beat well till incorporated. Add the honey and mix well
  4. Sift in the flour in 3 parts, mixing each part with a spatula till incorporated. Add the nuts and the dates (drained) and fold.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared tin and bake for 40-45 minutes or until the skewer inserted comes out clean.
  6. Serve with a hot cup of tea or coffee.
