Ingredients to make Uttappam

  • Raw rice- 2 cups
  • Urid dal- 1 cup
  • fenugreek seeds- 1 spoon
  • Cooked rice- 1 tbsp
  • salt- as per taste
  • cumin- 1 tsp
  • turmeric- a pinch
  • chilli powder- little
  • onion- 1
  • coriander leaves- little
  • curry leaves- little

How to make Uttappam

  1. Soak urid dal, fenugreek seeds and rice for 6 hours.
  2. Drain them and blend into a smooth batter along with cooked rice and water.
  3. Allow it to ferment for 6 hours.( overnight)
  4. Next day morning, in the batter add onions, salt, turmeric, chilli powder, cumin, curry leaves, coriander leaves and mix well.
  5. Heat a tawa add little oil and pour 2 laddles of batter. Dont spread with spatula. It should be thick. Close it with a lid and allow to get cooked.
  6. Flip to other side when it gets golden brown colour.
  7. Cook on other side and serve hot for breakfast with coconut chutney/ tomato chutney/ ginger chutney.

My Tip:

Batter should not be too loose.
