ABOUT Avarekalu Akki Roti RECIPE

This is a Karnataka special breakfast.karnataka will be flooded with field beans or avarekalu in winters and it will be added in many dishes. In their famous akki roti, they add avarekalu and serve it for breakfast.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Fresh Field beans or mochai 1/4 kg
  2. Rice flour 1 1/2 cups
  3. Grated coconut 1/2 cup
  4. Onion 1
  5. Green chillies 2
  6. Jeera 1/2 tsp
  7. Salt accordingly
  8. Water 2 1/2 cups
  9. Banana leaf for patting the roti

Instructions

  1. Remove the seeds from field beans and soak them in water for 24 hrs
  2. After a day if you try to squeeze each seed seperately the outer cover comes off easily
  3. Cook them for 1 whistle with little salt
  4. In a bowl boil water and add the rice flour and switch off. Stir well
  5. Add the cooked field beans,grated coconut, finely chopped onions and green chillies,jeera,salt to the mixture and mix well.(sorry I forgot to take a picture)
  6. Knead with hand and make orange sized balls
  7. Pat them on a banana leaf with 1 or 2 holes and by greasing your hand with little oil or ghee
  8. Cook it in an iron pan on low flame drizzle some oil
  9. Cook on both sides till it turns crispy. Take care while flipping as it may break
  10. Serve hot with a dollop of butter and any spicy chutney
