Sutta kathirikai or flame cooked brinjals are the main ingredients of this gravy. This is is cooked in South Indian style and has less oil and calories.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 3-4 large brinjals preferably with less seeds
  2. Shallots a fistful
  3. Green chillies 3
  4. Tamarind amla sized
  5. Salt accordingly
  6. Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
  7. Asafoetida a pinch
  8. Curry leaves few
  9. Mustard seeds 1/2 tsp
  10. Jeera,1/2tsp
  11. Urad dal 1/2 tsp
  12. Grated coconut for garnishing
  13. Coriander leaves for garnishing


  1. Cook the brinjals in the flame till the outer skin is charred and turns black
  2. Once well done immerse them in water and peel the burnt skin
  3. In a kadai add little oil for the mustard to splutter,then add mustard,jeera,curry leaves,finely chopped shallots,green chillies and asafoetida
  4. Mash/chop the brinjal
  5. Now add the brinjals,salt and turmeric in the kadai
  6. Cook covered till the brinjals are mushy
  7. Add the tamarind water and give it a boil
  8. Garnish with grated coconut and coriander leaves.
  9. Serve hot with rice
