It has lentils which makes it protien rich and Milk cream gives it a rich taste and aroma of whole spices is just heavenly.typically whole urad is used in this recipe but whole urad does not suit my parents in law so i substituted it with kali masoor dal. So this can be called dal makhni with a twist.

Ingredients to make Dal makhni

  • Kali masoor dal 1 cup
  • rajma 2 -3 tbsp
  • Chopped onion 2 big
  • tomato 4 big size
  • ginger 1 inch piece
  • Milk cream or amul cream 2-3 tbspoon
  • Black cardamom 2
  • cinnamon stick 1 piece
  • jeera half tsp
  • Hing asafoetida 1 pinch
  • red chilli powder half tsp
  • coriander powder 1tsp
  • cumin powder half tsp
  • salt to taste
  • Garam masala half tsp
  • Desi ghee 1tbsp

How to make Dal makhni

  1. Soak dal rajma overnight
  2. In morning boil dal and rajma adding salt till rajma becomes soft.
  3. Heat a kadai. Add desi ghee. When ghee heat up add whole spices and hing. And let it release it's aroma.
  4. Add chopped onion and grated ginger and fry.
  5. Grind the tomato to a fine paste. Add to the fried onion ginger. And add the powder spices. And cook for 3-4 minutes.
  6. Add the cooked dal and add the cream . Mix well and let it simmer for about 15 minutes.
  7. Add garam masala and coriander . Garnish with cream and coriander and serve hot with jeera rice.
