About Spicy Mutton Fry/Kari Vathakal Recipe

This recipe is from a tamil cookbook (Paavaiyarukana Palsuvai Malar).This is my husbands favourite and is surely a keeper. Try this and you will love it.

Spicy Mutton Fry/Kari Vathakal

Ingredients to make Spicy Mutton Fry/Kari Vathakal

  • Boneless Mutton - 300 gm
  • tomato Sauce - 2teaspoon
  • chilli powder - 1 and 1/2 teaspoon
  • Gingelly oil - 3teaspoon
  • Big onion - 1 medium sized (finely chopped)
  • turmeric powder - 3/4 tsp
  • coriander leaves - to garnish
  • To Saute and Grind::
  • Gingelly oil - 1 tsp
  • Red chilli- 5
  • jeera - 1teaspoon
  • coriander seeds - 2teaspoon

How to make Spicy Mutton Fry/Kari Vathakal

  1. Clean mutton and cut into small pieces.
  2. Saute and grind to a powder the ingredients given in the 'To Saute and grind' list. Saute till a nice aroma arises. Maybe 2 mins in low flame.
  3. Heat oil in a pressure cooker and add the onion. Saute the onions till translucent.
  4. Add the cleaned and chopped mutton pieces and add turmeric and give a stir.
  5. Add the ground masala powder, stir and add water enough to cook the mutton (I used nearly 3/4 cup). Add salt and close the cooker.
  6. Cook the mutton upto 7 or 8 whistles or till soft. Open the cooker and wait for water to reduce. Stir occassionally.
  7. When the water level has reduced a little, add the chilli powder and tomato sauce. Mix well.
  8. Stir occasionally till it is dry and the desired consistency is reached and switch off. Serve garnished with coriander leaves.

My Tip:

You can have this with hot steamed rice or rasam rice or with roti. Tastes good even with dosa. The masala tastes so yummy.
