ABOUT Masala Mutton Curry RECIPE

This coastal style mutton dish is made in mustard oil with all fresh grounded spices with a hint of cinnamon powder which gives it a perfect flavour.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Mutton pieces with bone 1/2kg
  2. Potato medium sized-2
  3. Tomato medium sized-2
  4. Onion medium sized-3
  5. Garlic pods-4
  6. Ginger-1inch piece
  7. Cumin seeds 1tsp
  8. Coriander seeds 1tsp
  9. Dry red chilli 1
  10. Sugar 1/2tsp
  11. Salt 1tsp or according to taste
  12. Turmeric powder 1/2tsp
  13. Red chilli powder 1/2tsp
  14. Mutton masala 1tsp
  15. Cinnamon powder 1/2tsp
  16. Lemon 1/2
  17. Warm water 1cup
  18. Chpped coriander leaves 1tbs
  19. Mustard oil 5tbs


  1. Wash mutton and mix a little salt, turmeric powder and lemon juice and keep it covered till the time you start cooking.
  2. Grind 2 onion with garlic, ginger, dry chilli, cumin and whole coriander with a litter water and make a fine paste.
  3. Chop the rest 1onion, cut potatoes into 4 big pieces and make paste of tomatoes and keep aside.
  4. Heat 1tbs mustard oil in a pan and fry the marinated mutton for 5-6 mins.
  5. Heat rest mustard oil in a cooker until smoking point, add sugar and when color changes add chopped onion,saute until color changes to brown.
  6. Add grounded masala, cook a little, add turmeric powder, chilli powder,mutton masala powder and fry until oil separates.
  7. Add tomato paste , mix salt and cook.
  8. Once cooked well, add mutton, potatoes and fry till masala is well coated.
  9. Now add warm water and cover the lid of cooker, give 1whistle and then cook in low flame for another 5-7 mins.
  10. After sometime open the lid, add cinnamon powder, mix well and garnish with chopped coriander.
