About Easy Cabbage Thoran Recipe

Thoran is a dry dish traditionally made of finely chopped vegetables like cabbage,french beans, string beans and many more. Today I have made out of Cabbage. This common dish is usually eaten with steamed rice. Thoran is a common menu item for a sadhya.

Easy Cabbage Thoran

Ingredients to make Easy Cabbage Thoran

  • cabbage- finely chopped 1 small bowl
  • onion- sliced length wise
  • green chillies-2 nos cut length wise
  • garlic- 7 to 8 nos roughly crushed
  • urad dal- 2 tsp
  • mustard seeds- 1 tsp
  • Cummin Seeds- 1 tsp
  • turmeric powder- 1 tsp
  • Freshly grated coconut- 1/2 cup
  • curry leaves-few sprigs
  • Dry Red chillies- 2 nos optional
  • Oil 2 tbsp( best use coconut oil)
  • salt as required

How to make Easy Cabbage Thoran

  1. Heat deep pan or kadai add oil and add udal dal fry until it turns light brown in color, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds allow it to splutter. Make sure you don't burn udal dal during this process
  2. Add sliced onion, green chillies, dry red chillies,curry leaves and crushed garlic fry until onion turns pink in color.
  3. At this stage add sliced cabbage, turmeric powder and salt, stir well and cook for 5 mins without any lid?( please when you use lid cabbage becomes soggy hence avoid and cook without any lid.
  4. Once Cabbage is cooked 80 % add grated coconut and stir well. Cook for another 2 to 3 mins stirring occassionally
  5. Switch off flame and serve hot with Steam rice, dal or sambar. Additionally you can also break one egg and add to this thoran whil frying onion and chilly that is not part of our sadhya but this way also cabbage taste awesome

My Tip:

Do not cover with lid while cooking cabbage While crackling mustard and cumin seeds becareful with urad dal, do not burn it or else it turns bitter Do not cover with lid after removing cabbage from stove. Leave it open until cools down. Or else your cabbage with become soggy.
