ABOUT Roasted Coconut Chutney Powder / Thogaiyal Podi RECIPE

This coconut chutney powder is the mandatory item in my kitchen shelf and helps in hand on busy days by serving as side dish for idli, dosa, upma and curd rice. This is the signature recipe of my mother in law which she learnt from her mom.

Ingredients Serving: 15

  1. Shredded coconut from one full coconut
  2. Red chillies 12
  3. Urad dal 5 table spoons
  4. Coriander seeds 2 tea spoons
  5. Tamarind a gooseberry size torn to small pieces
  6. Asafoetida 1/2 tea spoon
  7. Salt to taste
  8. Coconut oil 3 table spoons

Instructions

  1. Heat a heavy bottomed kadai with oil.
  2. Roast the chillies, dal, asafoetida and tamarind separately. Roast the dal till it becomes golden brown. Keep the roasted items in a bowl and allow to cool down.
  3. Finally in medium flame patiently dry roast the shredded coconut till the coconut becomes golden brown.
  4. Except coconut add all the roasted items in to a blender jar with necessary salt and grind to powder. Add the coconut to it and give few turns.
  5. Mix well, allow to cool down and store in air tight box.
  6. This powder can also be added to any veg stir fries as flavouring agent.
