About Bengali Sweet Tomato Chutney Recipe

This is a sweet tomato chutney, prepared in Bengali household, especially on special occasions.Its a must have dessert/ side dish in pujas(alongside khichuri) and along with a great family lunch

Bengali Sweet Tomato Chutney

Ingredients to make Bengali Sweet Tomato Chutney

  • 1 tablespoon mustard oil
  • 1 dried red chilli
  • 1/2 tablespoon Bengali paanch phoron seeds
  • 2 large ripe tomatoes rinsed,chopped roughly
  • 1 teaspoon/to taste salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon citric acid/1 tablespoon tamarind extract
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 3-4 pieces of chopped dates
  • 5-6 small pieces of dried mango sheet(aam paapad)
  • 6-8 raisins
  • 5-6 cashews

How to make Bengali Sweet Tomato Chutney

  1. Heat oil in a wok and add dried red chilli and paanch photon seeds
  2. Once the seeds to splutter,add the chopped tomatoes and salt
  3. Mix well and cook covered till tomatoes turn slightly mushy
  4. Now reduce heat and add the tamarind/ citric acid,sugar and turmeric powder
  5. Now cover and cook well until tomatoes soften completely (you will see the skin peel off)
  6. Add the dates,mango sheets, raisins and cashews
  7. Mix well and let simmer on low heat until the mango sheet and dates absorb the flavours and soften as well
  8. Once done,take off heat and transfer into a serving bowl
  9. Serve warm/chilled accompanied by piping hot khichudi(khichdi)
  10. Enjoy!
