One of the popular sindhi breakfast recipe. It is basically bengal gram (chana dal) served with pakwan(crisp fried Indian bread)

Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. For the dal
  2. 1 cup channa dal (split bengal gram)
  3. 1/4 tsp turmeric
  4. Salt to taste
  5. 2 tsp chilly pd
  6. 1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
  7. 1/2 tsp dry mango powder(amchur pd)
  8. For pakwan
  9. 2 cups plain flour (maida)
  10. 2 tbsp oil (any cooking oil)
  11. 1 tsp cumin seeds
  12. 1 tsp carom seeds(ajwain)
  13. Salt to taste
  14. Oil for deep frying
  15. Water as required
  16. For garnishing
  17. Tamarind chutney
  18. 2 tbsp Chopped onions
  19. Coriander leaves


  1. Wash and soak channa dal for 1 hr, drain and boil with 3 cups of water, salt, turmeric in a cooker (gv 3 whistles)
  2. Switch off the flame, once the pressure is released take dal in bowl
  3. Heat oil in in small kadai, add cumin when it crackles add chilly pd and amchur pd, swith off the flame and add this tempering on boiled dal, garnish it with some chopped onion, coriander leaves and tamarind chutney and keep aside
  4. Now for pakwan combine all the ingredients listed for pakwan in large mixing bowl
  5. Add some water to this and knead a firm dough
  6. Divide the dough into 12 equal portions
  7. Roll it like puris and prick it with fork at regular intervals (very important to prick or else pakwans will puff)
  8. Heat the oil in kadai and deep fry it on medium flame
  9. Fry it till it turns crisp and golden brown from both the sides
  10. Similarly fry rest pakwans, drain on absorbent paper
  11. Pakwans are ready to serve
  12. Dal pakwan is ready to serve
